Some Like It Hot

Three American icons: Each actors\ actress has an unique quality that represents the American culture.

Assignment:  Films has a tendency to reinforce stereotypes in society. Gender, age, race, religion, and cultural stereotypes.   What are the stereotypical characters in this movie.  Give supportive evidence: examples:

The next part is to tell us of another movie that expresses a strong stereotype in our society at any point of time.  For example, the "Godfather" gives us the impression of the Italian gangster in America.

The next part is to tell us of another movie that did the opposite by challenging a stereotypical character in America society.  Or even showcasing a neostereotype in society.  The Breakfast Club explores teenager stereotypes by having each one interacting with each other during a Saturday detention. Lara Croft and Tombraiders' movies gave us the female version of Indiana Jones.

This movie shows the stereotype that all blondes are dumb. It says that Sugar is always falling for men. they use her and then abandon her. She never learns when to give up on them.

    Part 2:
The movie "Jaws" expresses the stereotype that all sharks are freaks of nature and deserve to be hunted down to extinction. Sharks are crazy animals that like to kill people and animals.

    Part 3:
The movie "Finding Nemo" challenges a popular stereotype. It says that sharks aren't all bloodthirsty killing machines. The sharks all try to stop thinking that fish are food. They stop trying to eat them.
"I am a shark, not a mindless eating machine. If I am to change this image, I must first change myself. Fish are friends, not food."

    1. Aren't they both challenging and promoting the stereotype of sharks eating everything? The sharks are trying to get rid of the thought, but that meant that for a long period of time, they did have that stereotype(sharks have been around for a long time), so they are saying it is a true stereotype. Of course they are also trying to forget that fish are food(which they rely on for daily energy because they are carnivores are can't possibly live without them being eaten, otherwise they would die out). The point is that the makers of the movie are confirming the stereotype that sharks are "...mindless eating machine[s]".

  2. When Monroe learns that her millionaire boyfriend who admits to no attraction to females is actually a broke who's fed her a pack of lies. What does Marilyn do? She leaves the band during its performance to chase after Curtis, who for a reason unknown to her, is running for his life from gangsters to get into a motorboat with a weird man with a huge mouth driving it. You would think that she would notice it is the same motor boat as the one Curtis takes her in in the beginning of the movie.

It also stereotypes her in this way, for she is blond and the stereotype is that blonds are "dumb". She notes that she always falls for saxophone players over and over again, even though they always leave her in the dust. She ends up on a boat with a saxophone player in the end...

Another stereotype is when Sugar notes that she wants a millionaire that "wears glasses" or a husband that wears glasses", because they are "much more gentle, and sweet, and helpless." Her character, unlike many typical female characters in movies and in real life, then and now, rejects the usual "protector type" (another stereotype) and opts for security instead. Sugar, instead of depending on a man, wants the man to depend on her.

  3. The movie is saying that all billion/millionaires very headstrong, popular, old and they get everything they want just because they are so rich.In the movie, Osgood wanted Daphne for himself and he tried everything to get her.He doesn’t give up and in the end even though he found out that Daphne was a male, he didn’t care. In the beginning all the girls wanted to marry rich guys and all of them was very old.

In the Hunger Games, the upper class people are like the rich people and that they are like everything. They get everything they wanted. They were cold hearted because in the movie they just make the poor people fight to death with each other and all they do is sit and laugh.

Also in the Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen breaks the image of that all girls are weaker and that they can’t survive in the wild as good as the boys. She not just survive she won in the most epic way.

  6. Part 1:
The police and Spatz gang showed the common stereotype of police versus gangster.

A stereotype in Some Like it hot is that blonds are dumb. For example when Sugar says she is always enticed by the saxophone players, falls for them, lends them money, and gets left in the dust over and over again. She also runs after a mysterious man who had lied to her, and kissed her, and ends up in a boat with him and a weird smiley millionaire running away from some gangsters for some reason unknown to her.

  7. Part2:

A common stereotype is of the crazy, psycho, weirdly accented bad guy. The hero then has to defeat or kill the bad guy in the movie. The bad guy usually has creepy actions, gestures, sayings, and usually wants to kill the main character. He has to always be the baddest person. This stereotype is seen in Silence of the Lambs, Stargate, Dune, 3:10 To Yuma, The Powerpuff Girls, Braveheart, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Rob Roy, The Lion King, countless other anime.

This sparks up another stereotype, the hero vs. the bad guy or evil. (good versus bad) This is seen in Harry Potter, Mortal Combat, the Three Musketeers, Terminator, The Dark Knight, Batman, Superman, Kick Ass, Star Wars, and thousands more...

and technically the good versus evil is the basic storyline for every plot ever created, but sometimes those are changed, like the bad guy might be nature or something. but its always good vs. a form of evil....

  8. Part 3:

Disney took a sledgehammer to the subject of gender stereotyping in Mulan, a film that not only broke the cross-dressing barrier but also ratcheted up the violence level for children's animation. Mulan fights the evil heavies and shows that women are not dumb and weak but smart and strong. It shows that they, too, can fight. In the beginning she its treated wrongly, as if her fate belonged in a marriage that her parents wanted her to have. She did not make it. In the end she marries on her own. This strikes another blow at matchmakers. (Mulan is a Disney Movie, unlike most Disney movies, this one doesn't portray as many stereotypes, but challenges them)

  9. Part 1: One stereotypical character in this movie is Sugar played by Marilyn Monroe. In this movie she is depicted as a “dumb blonde” because in the movie, she says she always falls in love with saxaphone players even though they always dump her in the end or take/borrow her money and then leave and she never learns from her mistakes and keeps going for saxaphone players. Another character that is stereotypical in this movie are saxaphone players/musicians. They are depicted as “leeches” or people who use you to get what they want. Like when Sugar was talking about her past relationships with saxaphone players and how they just used her for her money.

Part 2: “ The Haunted Mansion” expresses a stereotype that every big, scary looking mansion is haunted and dangerous. Not all big scary - looking mansions are haunted.

Part 3: The movie “Mulan” expresses a stereotype that all girls and women should express good manners and be housewives and must not participate in combat like fighting in a war. But this stereotype is defeated when Mulan dresses up like a man and joins the war and becomes a great warrior.

  10. Part 1
A stereotype in this movie is that women want to please men and get a man. Sugar shows this throughout the entire movie. She first talks about her (weird) obsession with sax players and how she is constantly falling in love with men. Then once they get to Florida she says that she wants to meet a rich man and pretty much fall in love and marry him. The boat scene is a VERY prominent example of this. She won’t stop kissing the millionaire and falls madly in love with him. She then becomes extremely sad when the millionaire says he has to leave and marry another woman. Sugar asks for alcohol and is really sad. She then instantly becomes happy when she meets up with Joe who she finds out was the millionaire. She doesn’t even care that he just lied to her face two times about his identity. Also Sugar throughout the movie is wearing revealing clothing.
    Part 2
Snow White is a primary example of stereotyping of women. It portrays women as going around doing the household duties. It also shows women as waiting for a man to save them. She is just waiting for a man to come and enter her life and make everything all happy.
    Part 3
Sandra Bullock as Leigh Ann Tuohy is an example of a woman defying stereotypes. She is not subservient and stands up for herself. She is able to stick to her morals and hardworking. She doesn’t change to accommodate to what others think but instead does what she thinks is right.

  11. Part 1:
In this movie a stereotype is the musician men treating the ladies as toys and just playing with them. They go around everywhere and just "hook up" with any random lady that looks hot and has big bosoms. Another stereotype is the stupid blonde girl who just doesn't know anything. She doesn't know that she is being played with and harassed. She just doesn't care.

    Part 2:
Another movie with a stereotype is White Chicks. In this movie the 2 guys from the FBI are big, buff, and BLACK. Yes, the FBI investigators are black showing that they are the only big, buff, and tough guys.

    Part 3:
The 1st and 2nd "Transformers" movie challenged a stereotype. The stereotype was that hot girls wearing short clothing and all slutty don't know how to do anything besides kiss. In this movie Megan Fox proves that she is hot, sexy, and SMART!! She knows a lot about engineering and technology.

  12. Part 1:
They portray the stereotype that all blondes are dumb and love sick. Sugar is always falling for saxaphone players. She implies that all saxaphone players get in a relationship and leave when they get what they want.

    Part 2:
In “The Help” the whites treat the maid, who are black, like they are inferior. One of the ladies wouldn’t let her black maid use the same restroom as her. She had her husband make a separate bathroom. This movie expresses the stereotype from the 1800’s - the late 1900’s that whites are superior to blacks.

    Part 3:
In “Air Force One” they defy the stereotype that women can’t be at high positions because they aren’t good leaders. Glenn Close plays the Vice-President.

  13. Part I:

There are many stereotypes in Some Like it Hot. There is the portrayal of the gangsters- which is basically true. There is also implications that everyone drank and payed no heed to the prohibition laws, which wasn't true. And the most obvious are the portrayal of blondes in the movie. Sugar is portrayed as pretty and stupid, the typical blonde, who also just wants to meet a rich millionaire and fall in love, which implies she is doing it for money. These two stereotypes are also represented in the other women of the band, as they dont act very bright, and drink a lot and want rich men to marry them. This is especially true in the party scene on the train.

    Part II:

There are too many stereotypical movies to count. However, Disney has done an amazing job of making a large percentage of them. This is sad, because they are teaching children all over the world bad and simply wrong values. One excellent example of this is Aladdin. In this movie, all the bad and stupid guys are portrayed with heavy accents, typical arabian features, and are,(coincidentially?) the bad guys. It portrays the Middle East as a barbaric, lawless place, with the limb removal justice system, and everyone is cruel to the poor. Both of these aren't even close to true. "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" is an extremely offending line uttered in the first five minutes of the movie. All of the people in the city look and speak like Arabs, no matter how biasedly they are portrayed, but then where does midwestern accented, 'white' looking Aladdin come from(even though he steals...hmmmm is that another stereotype?)? All the good guys look like they belong in America more than Agrabah. Also not only that, but look closely at Jasmine. She is always controlled by men. And Aladdin is constantly either with her or scantily clad belly dancers. Almost all Disney Princess movies portray stereotypes of women being helpless and just need to be pretty to survive. yuch. i hate princesses. Also the Siamese Cats in Lady and the Tramp portray Asians and the stupid scarecrows in Dumbo portray African Americans-totally untrue- but yea. dont get mad at me. you know who you are.

A movie that dispoves dumb blonde stereotypes is Legally Blonde. She starts out as your typical blonde but goes on to finish law school and prove to the world that she is smart and legally blonde. Another movie that disproves the stereotypes of women in general, not being able to do anything or work, is Mulan, which, ironically, is a Disney movie. It shows just how good, actually, better women are than men. its true:). And Mulan's skill and cleverness save China:)

    Part I:
Some like it hot shows the sterotype that blondes are dumb. The movie shows that Sugar is putting herself in a situation that has failed over and over again, and is hoping to expect a different result (which is the definition of insanity). She doesn't realize the problem and keep trying and trying, refusing to give up

    Part II:
Movies like "Superman", "Spiderman", "Indiana Jones", and "Green Lantern" show that heroism is a Male-dominate thing and mostly an adult thing. Heroes can only be burly adult men, not fragile little girls (or boys for that matter..)

    Part III:
A movie that challenges a sterotype is "Lilo and Stitch". Lilo is a hero who is both a female AND a child. (She isn't like the super major awesome hero in the movie, but she is a notable heroine) She isn't very frail, and isn't afraid to stand up to "Big Dummy".

Stereotypical characters: The stereotype that musicians are heartless and chase women for their bodies.
Sugar constantly complains that saxophone players keep leaving her after the one night stands. She says she loves them, but they keep leaving her.

    Part 2
The movie Salt promotes stereotypes that all Russians are crazy spies "out to get the president", and that they won't hesitate to stab your back. WHICH IS NOT TRUE!

    Part 3
The movie Hairspray diminishes the stereotypes that fat people cannot dance.

  19. Part 1: This film presents a stereotype that all millionaires have many wives. In this film, Osgood, a millionaire, mentions that he has many wives.

Part 2: In Gone with the Wind, it represents the stereotype that black slaves are stupid and dimwitted. Prissy, a black slave, is a not very bright person, and is very dimwitted.

Part 3: A movie that challenges a popular stereotype is Mulan, the Disney version. During the era the real Mulan lived in, women couldn't be independent and couldn't stand up to authority. Mulan contradicted this by standing up to the Chinese authority and joining the Chinese army to fight for her country.

  20. 1. "Some Like It Hot" shows the stereotype of blondes and men. Sugar is depicted as a desperate blonde and wanting rich men. She keeps falling for saxophone players even though they always leave her. She never learns from her mistakes. Men are shown being addicted to women and the typical do-anything-to-get-the-girl type.

    2. Bring It On 3 is a stereotypical movie since it shows a black girl that talks with a lot of slang, the blondes that are really dumb, and the jerky jocks.

    3. Ms. Congenialty 1 & 2 show women that are really tough and can beat men up. Usually women are shown as the damsel in distress and really girly with 50 pounds of makeup on. Another movie that shows tough women is Mulan.

  21. Part I:

Sugar: Sugar, played by Marilyn Monroe, was a stereotypical character because she was a blonde in the movie. She complained to Josaphine about saxophone players and how she is so attracted to them but it always ends in heartbreak. But when Josephine falls for Sugar and becomes a yacht-owning millionaire saxophone player, she still falls for him even though she promised Josaphine that she would never fall for saxophone player. This represents a stereotypical character because she was a blonde and apparently “blondes are DUMB” (no offense to Masha and Rosa :D). She wasn’t all that smart and blondes aren’t either.

    Part II:

Another movie that represents a stereotype is “White Chicks”. This movie is basically the same like “Some Like It Hot” because it has the same storyline. The guys who become the blonde stars. They represent these girls with a lot of attitude because white girls are thought to be “snobby”. This is a stereotype because not ALL white girls are snobby but the guys who play the girls act snobby and dramatic.

    Part III:

A movie that challenges a stereotype is Mulan. This challenges the stereotype that boys are the stronger gender over girls. Mulan represents that being a girl doesn’t mean she can’t do anything. She becomes a strong figure than any girl could. Mulan challenges the sexist stereotype. :D

    Part 2:
In the Jet Li movie, Lethal Weapon 4, Jet Li is depicted as a ruthless kingpin similar to many other movies of the kind that include Asian crime lords. Chinatown is also depicted in many movies as a hostile environment full of illegal trade, murder, and gang wars.

    Part 3:
There is a stereotype that all football players, from high school to the pros, are egotistical jerks. The movie The Game Plan challenges that stereotype by taking the stereotypical football player, Joe Kingman, and giving him a daughter that changes his life. Kingman becomes a nice, kind, and caring father that people normally wouldn't expect from an egotistical football player.

The gangsters are stereotypical because they play cards, drink, and look for women together...after they murder a bunch of people and try to murder innocent people.

Part 2: The movie Miss Congeniality expresses stereotypes for beauty pageants, Texans, feminists, and crazy moms. They make all the beauty pageant girls seem like pretty idiots that only care about how they look, the feminists are all manly, the texans are cowgirls, and people try to kill for a crown.
